Our Network > Dr Ann Heywood

Ann is a highly experienced senior leader and Associate of Ranmore who was until recently Principal and Chief Executive of the College of Estate Management (CEM). CEM is a charitable, not-for-profit, provider of higher education through distance learning and has a reputation as a world leader in education for the surveying and construction professions. During her 7 year tenure as CEO of CEM she extended its reach and external profile significantly, restructured the organization for more effective staff and student support and, in 2012, oversaw the achievement of independent taught degree awarding powers for the College.

She has a particular interest in the leadership of higher education institutions and professional services firms and the process of managing a commercial portfolio of programs and services, whilst also respecting the values of the organization, whether that is operating on a commercial basis, is publicly funded or operating as a charity.

Prior to taking up the appointment within HE, Ann worked in professional services consultancy, advising upon environmental and sustainability matters at both the local and corporate level. She founded, built and sold two consultancies and went on to advise the purchaser of one on the integration of the organizations postacquisition.

In addition to her advisory work in relation to HE leadership she is also interested in

  • Assisting those involved in senior level leadership transitions drawing on both our work on 'Baton Passing' and her own experience in HE and consultancy;
  • Creating the conditions within which institutional innovation is enabled and enhanced; and
  • Introducing and expanding sustainability and sustainable working practices within organizations, in order to increase their resilience.

In her earlier career, Ann worked in an advisory capacity in the public sector and was also a Research Fellow at CEM. She was also the founder and later managing partner of CPM - environmental planning and development consultancy, which grew to over 35 staff before being sold to a major engineering company.

She gained her PhD, in using sustainability as a trigger and organizing principle for corporate cultural change, from the University of Salford in 2004 and is professionally qualified as a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS) as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (FCIOB) and as a Member of the Chartered Management Institute (MCMI). She holds a BSc (1st Class) from the University of London.

Ann is also a Trustee of the National Playing Fields Association and of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Surveyors. She was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors in 2012.
